The transition from high school to university mathematics and the low success rate in the first year of university mathematics is a problem worldwide. Within this problem, one of the biggest challenges for educators is that students come to universities with very different mathematical backgrounds. Aiming to reduce the knowledge gap in first-year mathematics courses, we applied a special kind of retrieval practice. Retrieval practice refers to the strategic use of retrieval to enhance memory. We found that in cases where retrieval practice was implemented the knowledge gap diminished over time. Contrary, when retrieval practice was absent, the knowledge gap remained.
