Csilla Zámbó’s presentation at PME49

Csilla Zámbó represented our research group with her talk (OC) titled Improving mathematical thinking by playing board games in maths lessons – A second take at the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME 49) conference in Helsinki. 

In her presentation, Csilla summarized the findings from the in-depth analysis of the first phase of our research – which examined the effect of playing board games in class on the  development of mathematical thinking among tenth-grade students. The results confirmed the positive effects of playing board games; the experimental group’s geometry skills improved, and they even performed better on the final assessments than the members of the control  group. Another important topic of the presentation was the second, so-called “crossover” phase of the study, in which the experimental and control groups switched roles compared to the first phase. The data collected in this phase allow for a variety of further analyses. The presentation also discussed the preliminary results and possible directions for further research.
