Anna Stirling gave a presentation at the MIDK2026 conference in Debrecen, titled How can we evaluate students' problems? Investigating Leavy and Hourigan’s Framework for Posing Elementary Mathematics Problems.

Mathematical problem posing plays a key role in developing mathematical thinking and creativity, yet it is rarely integrated into teaching practice due to a lack of supportive guidelines. Our research focuses on refining a system that facilitates the classroom application of task design and the objective assessment of student work. We used Leavy and Hourigan’s eight-dimensional F-PosE framework as a basis. In a study conducted with a 10th-grade class, we scored student-generated problems according to F-PosE’s eight indicators and analyzed inter-rater reliability using specific statistical methods. Based on the results and experiences, we propose modifications to the framework to better support teachers' instructional work and formative assessment.
